Rusty Text Effect in Photoshop
This is my first tutorial so I'd really appreciate any suggestions or feedback on it.
This is what the final result will look like
Step 1 - Creating a New Document
Create a new document with the dimensions and resolution specified below.
Step 2 - Creating the background effect
Set the fore ground colour to #600000 and the background to #00000. Now click 'Filter>;Render>;Clouds until you get a result which looks similar to the image below'
Step 3 - Blurring the background
After this we are going to blur the image heavily to have a subtle interplay of the foreground and background colours. Go to 'Filter>;Blur>;Gaussian Blur. Apply a blur with a radius of around 75px.
Now you should have a canvas which looks similar to the image below
Step 4 - Adding text
Now select the text tool and click on the canvas and type some text. I used the Abaddon font for this tutorial.
Step 5- Applying Layer Styles
Now go to Layer> Layer Style> Blending Options and apply the following styles to the text layer
Drop Shadow
Inner Shadow
Bevel and Emboss
Note the shape of the gloss contour for the image below.

Pattern Overlay - Appending a pattern
The pattern we intend to apply is not displayed by default in the patterns palette. We need to append some patterns by clicking the arrow on the patterns palette (marked in the image below with a green circle) and select 'Patterns' from the drop down menu.
You will get a prompt asking you whether you want to replace the current patterns with the patterns from patterns.pat. Click on 'Append' button.
Pattern Overlay
Now select the pattern named 'Rusted Metal' and use the following settings

Click the OK button to see the final result. Presto! You have some rusty looking text! Keep experimenting with the altitude and angle and the gloss contour in the Bevel and Emboss section to get some really nice results.
